Records, 1847-1963, include board of trustees' minutes, correspondence, financial records, personnel files, caseworkers' reports and casebooks (1855-1913), legal reports, adoption contracts, surrender and indenture papers, birth records, donor lists and registers. Also includes correspondence (1890-1909) of Jared W. Kimball, the first superintendent of the Children's Aid Society and Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. Records document conditions under which children were placed in facilities, cases of child abuse, neglect and juvenile crime, the removal of children from unfit parents, and children's advocacy in court. Also, the organizations' fundraising efforts, expenditures, real estate holdings, publicity files, information about adoption laws, records of children's field trips and other activities, and photographs of children.
